VIDEO-Start out by watching a clear and concise video on Student finance here.

IMPORTANT FACTS: From September 2017, universities and colleges can charge up to £9,250 a year. Universities will have to meet strict criteria to make sure that all students can access their courses regardless of background, and that they provide high quality teaching.

The amount students pay will depend on where they live (England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland) and the university and course they attend.

Fees per institution

You do not need to know tuition fees by institution but a current list of fees from universities in England & Wales can be found here.  10 charts that show the effect of tuition fees.

Private universitiesAll of the above figures are for state universities. Private universities can be a lot more expensive as they are not subject to the cap of £9,250 a year – for example, The New College of the Humanities will charge its students £18,000 a year.

What are universities going to do with all this extra cash?Universities are funded in two main ways: grants from central government which come from tax revenue, and tuition fees paid by students.
Whilst the government has said universities can charge more, it has also reduced the teaching grants they get. This means that students are essentially being asked to contribute a higher percentage of the cost of their education.
